A 32 year old ex-convict was apprehended & assaulted by the community after he attacked an elderly female on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD - KZN this morning (Monday).

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on scene at approximately 08:31 and discovered a man bleeding from injuries to his face. An irate 62 year old female informed Reaction Officers that she unlocked her white Ford Figo. As she got into the driver’s seat, the suspect entered her vehicle through the rear door.

He grabbed her around her throat with one hand and covered her mouth with his free hand. The female bit his finger. The suspect began assaulting her with a rivet that he had in his possession. Her calls for assistance attracted the attention of the public who confronted and assaulted the suspect. Business owners confirmed that the man loiters around the area and installs number plates on vehicles.

Reaction Officers identified the male who was arrested in April 2023 after he broke into a vehicle on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD - KZN and stole a laptop. RUSA Members apprehended him and recovered the stolen computer in his possession. He received a two (2) year sentence, one year of which was suspended. The man was released from Westville Prison - KZN in June 2024.

The suspect is detained at SAPS Verulam.
